Chocolate Cherry Crockpot Cake

cherrychoccakeI’ve been seeing videos on the internet for these crockpot cakes and wanted to try one, but didn’t want to make the apple spice version that’s been circulating. I wanted to make it with cherries and chocolate, so that’s what I did. This is about the simplest dessert you can make.

I started with my crockpot by spraying it with non-stick baking spray. I then added two cans of cherry pie filling. I chose one that was a lower sugar version. Trust me, it was sweet enough! I then topped the pie filling with a chocolate fudge cake mix, just the dry mix. Next, I drizzled 6 tablespoons of melted butter over the top.

I turned my crockpot on high for four hours and forgot about it. (Actually it was hard to really forget about it because the house smelled so good!)

I brought this to our neighbor’s house last night for our annual pumpkin carving pizza party and I’d say it was a hit. If I were making this for a dinner party I would add a couple tablespoons of bourbon and I would make a bourbon whipped topping to serve over the top. As it was last night, I just sprinkled powdered sugar over each serving. It was fantastic.

I actually believe this might satisfy my sister’s need for just a couple ingredients!

Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate fudge cake mix
  • 2 20-ounce cans cherry pie filling
  • 6 tablespoons melted butter
  • powdered sugar for sprinkling

Directions

Pour pie filling in crockpot. Add dry cake mix over the top (do not stir). Drizzle melted butter over the top. Cover the crockpot and set for four hours on high. Enjoy!

Until next time, Kris

Sounds like the updated version of a cherry pie dump cake from the 70’s.

      1. Jan, I always think about the 7-layer salad my mom used to make in the 70’s. I also remember raw beef and onions during the holidays, another favorite.
